For the first time in my 20+ year relocation career, I attended the fall WERC Global Symposium without registering for the conference sessions. As a gold sponsor and exhibitor we were given a limited number of “exhibit hall only” passes which granted admittance to the exhibits on all three days but did not allow attendance at the daily educational sessions.
Apprehensive at first, I quickly realized that I was free of the rigid conference agenda and could make my own schedule with as many meetings as possible throughout each day. What I also realized was that the WERC conference is the ultimate learning experience even without the conference sessions. The event allows you to network with hundreds of relocation professionals and not only learn about their business, but more importantly about their perception of “our” business. The relocation industry has changed dramatically over the past several years and there is no better way to understand all of the changes then to get out there and talk to folks in the business. Next year, consider taking out a booth if you really want to get a “pulse” on the industry. Where else can you meet relocation professionals from the host city of Denver one minute and from Egypt and India the next? In the end, we were all there for the same reason, to learn. What I realized was that not all learning takes place in a classroom.
