Why Would an Expat Consider a Move to an Overseas Country?

January 5, 2012 by Sue Lai

There are many reasons why an employee would like to take the opportunity to move overseas. Below are some of the popular reasons for making such a "big" decision in life:

1. Taxation

When you consider the ongoing increase in taxes in countries such as the UK or USA, it seems the more money you earn, the higher rate of tax you pay, and the less money you actually have to show for it at the end of the day. As a consequence, many of the low tax or even “zero tax” areas of the world are becoming more and more attractive to those considering a move overseas.

2. Employment opportunities

For the vast majority of people looking to move overseas, there is no doubt that employment opportunities rank very high on the list of reasons why they would like to move. It may be that you have an opportunity for promotion with your current employer or you may have been offered a new “opportunity of a lifetime” in a foreign country. The chance to make significant money in a relatively short period of time, for example Dubai offering a perfect example of this, can be a very strong driving factor to increase your wealth and living.

3. Learning a new language

Taking a job overseas is a perfect way to learn a new language. Most people understand the importance of languages as it’s much easier to be able to speak the local language in order to communicate with your staff and to achieve a result.

4. Cost of living

You may find that working abroad is an ideal opportunity to save the cost of living. You may be offered a generous salary or may be provided with some other incentives to take up an international job. You may benefit from paying lower taxes or the cost of accommodation and everyday goods is cheaper in your host country.

5. Retirement

Retirement to a foreign country is still very popular amongst a large number of expats. This ties in somewhat with regards to the weather and the financial implications of, for example, taxation in your homeland or cost of living. But, for many people, it is the opportunity to start a new life in their later years and enjoy the fruits of employment in their former years.

As a Global Mobility Tax Analyst primarily I can offer some considerations for individuals from a tax perspective.  Most companies opt for either tax equalisation or net pay arrangements currently to both lower their costs and ensure their employees are neither benefiting or suffering from tax treatment while on international assignments.  This should where possible not be a primary focus for individuals when considering the vast opportunities for working globally.  Having worked abroad myself, you gain a greater awareness of our rapidly changing world and gain an appreciation for different cultures and different ways to successfully conduct business across international borders.

Financially it may be beneficial for individuals as cost of living may be significantly reduced and you will possibly be given a COLA and/or uplift on your salary particularly where you are entering a more dangerous/politically unsettled location.

Ulimately you learn a lot about yourself as a person, you develop a real sense of self and belief in doing something that many people feel unable to do due to maybe lack of confidence, no opportunity to do so in their field, family ties etc.

If you company is supportive they will manage the compliance aspects for you and so you can focus on your new role and doing the very best job possible.
